Woodrow Wilson said, “I not only use all the brains I have, but all I can borrow.” What a smart man! That’s why people study and do research, right? We simply do not have the time and resources to become experts at everything. There are some critical questions we face in life that we need “more brains” to answer. I remember the day when my dad started reading “Consumer Report.” The magazine debuted in 1936 and published reviews and comparisons of consumer products based on results from its in-house testing laboratory. It is interesting that the magazine accepts no advertising, pays for all the products it tests, and as a not-for-profit organization, has no shareholders. We call that “unbiased brains.” When an individual or family is looking for help with a plan for downsizing to retirement living, where do you go for more “brains”?
There is a new website called www.whereyoulivematters.org created by the American Senior Housing Association (ASHA). The website says, “Live where you maximize the possibilities. Whether you’re a senior searching for answers or a caring family member eager to assist, you’ll find our unbiased, research-based, thought-provoking resources will guide you toward smart, confident decisions.” Sounds like a great place to start! In a very informative fashion the website simplifies the issues Seniors face and prepares them to gather the information they need to make that decision. The next step is to get out and visit communities in the area you live. Meet the staff, taste the food, talk to residents and get the “feel” that you’re in the right place. Doing your homework first from a neutral unbiased site is the best way to start. After that, go with your heart!
