Life After Loss

Excerpt from Daily Cures, Wisdom for Healthy Living by Connie Mason Michaelis

I read about a woman who had recently been widowed, and her discovery of how much strength came to her. So many tasks that her husband had handled fell to her, and she miraculously had the power to do them.  She said, “I found that I could do a lot of things I’ve never done before; make decisions that I’ve never thought of before. I suppose I had it before, but I never used it.”  Like a teabag, you never know how strong you are until you’re put in hot water.  All through our lives, we make strides in our personal growth when we face difficult situations.  Life after loss is a universal experience.

I have had the amazing opportunity to talk to thousands of Seniors who are facing loss.  It is not that they don’t have the strength to manage their households; it is dealing with the lack of companionship that is more difficult.  Those who cannot drive and stay active are at high risk for depression and a myriad of other ailments that follow.  It is essential that each individual find the support they need to carry on with everyday activities, but more importantly, those who are widowed need companionship. Research indicates that the lack of socialization may be the most significant health risk of all.  One of the benefits of living in a senior community is that there are so many others who share the loss of a spouse. Other residents and staff can be lifesavers. An added benefit is that this new environment provides the atmosphere to create a life after loss.  It requires personal faith and fortitude. It is such an important time to be surrounded by peers who share common experiences and for professionals who can help guide the way.  We all have hidden strengths, but it may be others that help us find it.
