More About Stuff...

Excerpt from Daily Cures, Wisdom for Healthy Aging by Connie Mason Michaelis

In my previous articles, the topic of stuff was directed to seniors moving into retirement living.  I’ve addressed the overwhelming task of downsizing and dispersing years of collected stuff.  This article is dedicated to all the baby boomers.  I include myself!  Our population group will be the largest number of seniors in history.  Not only are there many of us, but we are more affluent and have more disposable income than any population in history.  What does that mean?  For one thing, we’ll probably collect more stuff!  One of these days, we will have to dispose of it.  Our parents’ generation derived their values from the depression, so material possessions were scarce and important.  The boomer generation exploded with economic prosperity and value bigger, better, and more.  Besides, we live in a world where everything has become disposable. We are drowning in stuff.

Are you looking around a home with 40 years of history?  Is the basement full, attic brimming over, and three or four bedrooms still arranged as if there were a family of five living at home?  Do you still have boxes that belong to your kids full of high school memorabilia?  What more do I need to say?  Now is the time to deal with it.   I’m not talking about giving away the living room sofa, but how about tackling the attic or basement?  (My husband is going to see this in print!)  We live in denial about growing old.  We count the birthday candles, but we live with the illusion of immortality.   Another illusion we cling to is that, as couples, we will have each other to help clear out the clutter. The gut-wrenching truth is that if you wait, one spouse will get left to do it alone. Do it now for each other as the greatest gift of all.
